How to Wash Ties

Ties often sit in the back of the closet after an event, under the pretense of being dropped off at the cleaner's. By the time another special occasion or meeting pops up, that window of time for your cleaner to get the job done has passed. The delicate fabric means that machine washing is out of the question, but it is possible to wash some ties at home by hand. Check the tie's cleaning instructions before hand washing. If the tag says dry clean only, do not attempt this method.

Step 1

Fill a sink with cool water, and add 1 teaspoon of mild liquid detergent under the running water.

Step 2

Pull on a pair of rubber gloves and place the tie on top of the water. Push the tie into the water while laying flat to help it maintain it's shape. Avoid bending or crumpling the tie as you wash it, as this will create wrinkles.

Step 3

Move the tie in a circular motion to allow the detergent and water to soak in. Rotate the tie in the sink for 3 minutes.

Step 4

Remove the tie from the sink, and run it under a stream of cool water. Pour 1/4 cup of vinegar over the tie while the water runs over it, to help remove the soap and preserve the tie's shine.

Step 5

Hold the tie at the top with one hand, and grasp it just beneath the first hand with your opposing hand. Slowly move the second hand down the tie, until you reach the bottom to remove excess water from the fabric.

Step 6

Drape the tie over a waterproof railing or flat surface to air dry.
